| Feenstra Kuiper, Golombek and Alberti give result as +6-4=1; Sunnucks, Di Felice and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give +6-5=1. Spinrad reports both. Walker in Bell's Life in London (22 Nov. 1846) gives 6-4, and this is cited in the Schachzeitung (Feb. 1847, p.48). The Chess Player's Chronicle (v.7, 1846, p.403) gives +6-4, but then (v.8, 1847, p.1) explains that two final games had been played, to reach 11 won games, despite the fact that Harrwitz had already won the match, so the final result was +6-5=1. Similarly, the Illustrated London News gives +6-4=0 as the final result in the 21 Nov. 1846 issue, but the 12 Dec. 1846 issue says that two more games were played, with the final result as +6-5=1. The Illustrated London News also gives the start date as 12 Oct. 1846 (in the 17 Oct. 1846 issue) and reports the final result in the 12 Dec. 1846 issue, so I estimate that the match ended in Dec. Walker says in Bell's Life, however, as early as 7 Jun. 1846, that Harrwitz and Horwitz had 'commenced playing a series of games'. |
