The Chess Player's Chronicle of 17 July 1847 (p.226) says that five games will be played and gives the starting date. Three games are given in the later issues of the Chess Player's Chronicle, and two in the Illustrated London News, so I take these to be the five that constituted the match. The 11 Sept. 1847 issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle says that the match was 'but lately concluded', but the 1 Aug. 1847 issue of Bell's Life in London mentions that Rhodes won, so I will guess that it finished before the end of Jul. 1847. |
