In a response to a correspondent on the cover of what I take to be the Nov. 1848 Chess Player's Chronicle (the page at Google Books doesn't have a date, but it also says the Williams-Hannah match hadn't finished, though the 9 Dec. 1848 issue of the Illustrated London News gives its final result), Staunton says that 'up to this time' Kennedy and Harrwitz had played only 4 games with a score of +2-1=1 for Kennedy. Staunton gives all 4 games on pp.359-365 of the Dec. 1848 issue, saying that they were played 'during the past few days'. I take this to mean that they were played in Nov. 1848 (the publication dates for this volume were at the end of each month, so the Nov. issue would have been published at the end of Nov. 1848.) |
