Feenstra Kuiper, Di Felice and Spinrad say Harrwitz gave Pawn and move and give the result as +11-7. The Chess Player's Chronicle (3rd series vol.1, 1859, p.132) says only that it was a match at odds, and gives the result as +11-9; but the Chess Player's Chronicle issues of July and Aug. 1847 (vol.8) gives many of the games, all at Pawn and two moves and gives the result (p.258) as +11-7=0. Staunton's Illustrated London News column of 3 July 1847 (p.11) says that match started 'Monday', which I take to be 28 June 1847, particularly since only 1 game is reported (although if it had started on 21 June, another game between these players that appears in the 26 June issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle could be accounted for as part of this match...?). The Illustrated London News of 31 July 1847 says the match is 'on the point of termination' with the score so far at +10-7=0 for Harrwitz, and, if Staunton's column had to go to print some days before it appeared, the match may have finished in July. The 7 Aug. 1847 issue gives the final result as +11-7 for Harrwitz. |
