The Chess Player's Chronicle of May 1849 (also May 1859) gives +7-6 for Harrwitz; Alberti gives +7-4=2; Sunnucks gives +8-7; Feenstra Kuiper, Golombek, Di Felice, Giffen, Spinrad and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give +7-6=2. Giffen gives date as Feb. 1849; Di Felice gives 19 Feb. 1849 as the start date. The Chess Player's Chronicle of Mar. 1849 gives the date of the first game as 19 Feb. 1849. The Illustrated London News of 17 Mar. 1849 (p.179) gives the final result (+7-6=2) and says it 'terminated last week'. The 13th game was played 7 Mar. 1849, according to the Chess Player's Chronicle (p.137) and only 2 further games were played. So clearly, the match finished in March, sometime after the 7th but before the 17th. |
