Di Felice gives the result as +2-1 for von Jaenisch, and gives the date as 1849 and the location as Russia. The Chess Player's Chronicle of July 1850 (pp.193-198) gives 4 games between Shumov and von Jaenisch totalling +2-1=1 for von Jaenisch and gives the location as Saint Petersburg. Although Di Felice also gives a 3-game match between these two players in 1850, the score there is given as +1-2 for von Jaenisch, so I will guess that these games in the Chess Player's Chronicle (which gives no indication that they were recent) refer to the earlier match in Di Felice, dated 1849. The Illustrated London News (29 June 1850, p.459) also gives 2 of the games that appear in the CPC. I do not know whether this was considered a formal match; it may only be an account of the published games (Di Felice did not include the draw). |
