Hilbert (p.207) gives the result as 9-7 for Sellman. However, both the Baltimore American and Commercial Advertiser of 3 Oct. 1880 (p.2) and the Chess Player's Chronicle of 1 Nov. 1880 (p.256) give the result as 9-7 for Pleasants. Further confirmation is given in the 26 Sep. 1880 issue of the Baltimore American and Commercial Advertiser (p.2), which gives the result to date as Pleasants, 8; Sellman, 6. Two games had been played by the 5 Sep. 1880 issue of the Baltimore American and Commercial Advertiser, so I am guessing that the match started in the first few days of Sep. 1880. The final result is reported in the issue of 3 Oct. 1880, and 14 of the 16 games had been played by the 26 Sept. issue, so I am guessing that it ended in the last few days of Sep. 1880. |
