Notes: |
The match is announced as about to begin in the 28 Feb. 1852 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.179), but the first game already appears in 7 Feb. 1852 issue of The Chess Player (p.42), and it is reported as underway in the 22 Feb. 1852 issue of Bell's Life in London. Another game appears in the Chess Player's Chronicle for Mar. 1852 (p.79). I therefore suppose that it began in Feb. 1852. Bell's Life in London (2 May 1852, p.8) and the Chess Player (8 May 1852, p.150) give the final result (+5-3=9 for Williams). The 14 Mar. 1852 issue of Bell's Life in London gives the result after 10 games as +2-2=6 and the Chess Player of 29 May 1852 (p.171) gives the date of the 14th game (out of 17) as 30 Mar. 1852. Thus, the match probably finished in April, but possibly 1 May. |
