Kingston points out that this result (+5-1=2 for Staunton) appears in Di Felice's book, but not in the article on Staunton by R.N. Cole in Winter's World Chess Champions. The Schachzeitung of Oct. 1853 (p.322) says that Staunton first played de Rives even and then giving a handicap, and overall won a majority. A number of even games appeared in the Illustrated London News, the Chess Player's Chronicle, and the Schachzeitung, with a total result (noting that one game appeared in both the Illustrated London News and the Schachzeitung) of +5-1=2 for Staunton. Thus, this seems only to be the result of published games, and may not be representative. However, combined with the result for odds games (+4-5=1 for Staunton), the total of (+9-6=3) is consistent with the general statement in the Schachzeitung that overall Staunton won a majority, so I will assume that it is complete. I give the date as Aug. 1853 on the basis of the statement in the 3 Sept. 1853 issue of the Illustrated London News that the (even) game given there was 'one of several just played by Mr. Staunton with M. de Rives'. |
