Wade attributes this score to S.S. Urusov against Shumov, but it is clear from the contrast to results already given for S.S. Urusov that he means D.S. Urusov here. Wade and Di Felice give date as 1854. La Grande Storia degli Scacchi gives date as 1853. The Chess Player's Chronicle of Jan. 1854 (p.1) says the match was 'lately played at St. Petersburgh', and the Illustrated London News of 26 Nov. 1853 (p.447) says the games of the match have been received, so I presume it was actually played towards the end of 1853. A number of games between these two players are given in the Chess Player's Chronicle (3 games in the 1853 volume at +2-0=1 for Shumov, which are presumably not part of the match; 10 games in the 1854 volume at +6-4 for D.S. Urusov, which appear to be from the match. Also, one game (a win by D.S. Urusov) appears in the Illustrated London News of 17 Sept. 1853 (p.231), and another 2 in the 22 Apr. 1854 issue (p.278), one win each. |
