| D.W. Fiske (in The First American Chess Congress, p.507) is clear that these games were played on 1 Mar. 1855, while Morphy was at St. Joseph's College in Spring Hill, Alabama (near Mobile). M.F. Hillyer cites T. Frere's Morphy's Games of Chess which cites the Chess Monthly, giving the date as 1 Mar. 1856, but Morphy left Alabama in Oct. 1855. Sarah's Early Morphy Games page gives the date as 1855. The biography in the Illustrated London News of 18 Sept. 1858 (p.255) gives the date as 1 Mar. 1865. |
