| This was a set of offhand games played between Steinitz and Maurian during a visit of the former to New Orleans. Steinitz won two games on 30 Dec. 1882, and a third, after an adjournment, on 3 Jan. 1883. Then, 4 more games are found in various sources, played up to 18 Jan. 1883, Maurian getting one draw among these. While I don't usually rate results of selected published games because of the potential for selection bias, here it seems likely that if Maurian had won a game it would have appeared in print, so the result of +6-0=1 for Steinitz may well be representative. |
