Notes:
Spinrad gives +8-4 for Staunton at Rook odds (from the Oxford Encyclopaedia of Chess Games, saying there were 5 more with unknown result). Staunton, however, in the Illustrated London News of 6 Dec. 1856 (p.577) says that the match consisted of 11 games at Rook odds, and 11 games at Knight odds. Staunton does not give the final result. Over the next few months in the Illustrated London News, he does give 5 games at Rook odds (+3-2 for Staunton) and 6 at Knight odds (+4-2 for Staunton), but we cannot use these results because of the possibility of selection bias. Lange quotes Frank Leslie's Paper (as does the Era of 20 June 1858, p.13) saying that Staunton and Worrall played 45 games in total (possibly on separate occasions), with score +23-22 for Staunton, and that this included a 'little match' at Knight odds, won by Worrall. It is not clear how many of these games were played at what odds, so I cannot use the result as it stands. I will take Spinrad's +8-4 since the games from the Oxford Encyclopaedia of Chess Games must correspond closely to the 11-game match result, even though there appears to be one more game than Staunton said were played at Rook odds in the match. The Illustrated London News of 6 Dec. 1856 says the match was 'lately played' so I guess that it finished in Nov. 1856.
