| Fiske, in the book of the First American Chess Congress (p.507) gives the date as Jan. 1857, the place as New Orleans and the result as 4-0 for Morphy. The same information was given in the Chess Monthly (cited by Frère, who is cited by Hillyer, p.43, and in the Illustrated London News, 18 Sept. 1858, p.255). Sarah's web page on Morphy's Early Games also gives New Orleans. An obituary of Morphy from the New Orleans Times-Democrat (13 July 1884) at Sarah's Morphy website gives the total of Morphy's two matches with Meek during the period between 1855 and Apr. 1857 as 10-0 for Morphy, which agrees with Fiske, since the 1855 match was 6-0. |
