| Notes: |
| Hillyer (p.167) cites Frère, who gives the result as 15-1 for Morphy. The Dec. 1857 and Jan. 1858 issues of the Chess Monthly (p.30) give 7-1 for Morphy, as do Lange, Lawson and Spinrad. These games were played while Morphy was in New York for about 2 months from Oct. to Dec. 1857. According to Lawson, the first of these games was played on 7 Oct. 1857. The New York Daily Tribune of 8 Oct. 1857 says that Hammond lost two games against Morphy the day before. |
