The Jan. 1858 issue of the Chess Monthly (p.30) gives a total score in New York of Morphy against Paulsen as +8-1=3 (not including blindfold games). A speech by Frère in 1884 (cited by Hillyer, p.167) agrees with this total. Taking out +5-1=2 for their tournament games leaves +3-0=1 from offhand games. These offhand games were played while Morphy was in New York for about 2 months from Oct. to Dec. 1857. Some at least of the offhand games were played on 8 Oct. 1857, according to Fiske (p.76) and Lawson (p.58). Lawson also cites the Albion to the effect that they played 10 or 11 offhand games 'presumably even, all of which Morphy won', but says there is no record of these games. |
