Sergeant in Morphy Gleanings gives Morphy-Stanley 23-1 in 1857, but that must be Morphy-Schulten. According to Fiske (p.68) and Edge (cited at Sarah's Morphy website), at least 4 of these offhand games were played on the day of Morphy's arrival in New York, 5 Oct. 1857. According to Lawson and the New York Clipper of 10 Oct. 1857, exactly 4 were played that day (+4-0=0). All were played before Morphy's departure from New York on 17 Dec. 1857. Lawson gives a game dated 22 Oct. 1857. |
