| These games were played while Morphy was in New York for about 2 months from Oct. to Dec. 1857. The Chess Monthly of Dec. 1857 (p.383) gives +6-5 for Morphy at Knight odds; the issue of Jan. 1858 (p.30) gives +17-9=3 for Morphy at Knight odds; Frère, in an 1884 speech (quoted by Hillyer, p.167) gave +17-10=4 for Morphy at Knight odds, but this includes games 'played before and after his visit to Europe'. I will take Lawson's quote from the Chess Monthly as correct. |
