| An article in the Scotsman (26 Jan. 1860) reproduced at Sarah's Morphy website gives 6-1 for Morphy; Edge in a letter to Fiske dated 30 Dec. 1858, says the offhand games were played the day before and gives 5-1 for Morphy (also given in Edge's 'Exploits', p.201); Fiske, Appletons' cyclopaedia, Buck, Sergeant, Lawson, Spinrad, and Sarah's Morphy website also give 5-1. Staunton, in the Illustrated London News (12, 19 and 26 Mar. 1858, pp.270, 291, 318) gives all 6 games. |
