Sergeant gives 3-2 for Anderssen; Feenstra Kuiper, Di Felice, Max Lange and Alberti give +3-1=3 for Anderssen; Spinrad has two separate results +3-1=3 as in Feenstra Kuiper, and +2-1=2 for which he cites the New York Times of 11 Jan. 1859. However, Lawson also cites the same issue of the New York Times giving +3-1=2, which is also the result given in La Rivista degli Scacchi (1859, p.27). However, the New York Times of 11 Jan. 1859 acutally gives +2-1=2. Walker in Bell's Life in London of 26 Dec. 1858 (p.7) says they played 5 games but gives the result as +2-1=1 for Morphy. Sarah's Morphy website follows Lawson. Max Lange, Lawson and Sarah's Morphy website say that these games took place between Anderssen's arrival in Paris (on 15 Dec. 1858 according to Lawson and Sarah, but the evening of 14 Dec. according to Lange) and the start of his match with Morphy on 20 Dec. 1858. Although this was not a formally arranged match, Lawson says that it was played to settle an argument over who had won the most games, so Anderssen was trying to prove a point. I prefer, therefore, to consider this 'formal' rather than 'casual'. |
