| This result comes from an account by Congdon, published in the British Chess Magazine of Jun. 1897 (quoted by van Winsen), describing Martinez's first introduction to Philadelphia chess circles in the summer of 1874. He says that 'Mr. Elson was the only one willing to playe Mr. Martinez, and he lost', which seems to imply that only one game was played. |
