Notes: |
According to Hilbert, these games took place on 12 May 1859, the evening after Morphy's return from Europe. According to Lawson, they took place on the evening of his return, 11 May 1859, and this is supported by the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of 13 May 1879 (p.2). Frère, in an 1884 speech (quoted by Hillyer, p.167) gave +17-10=4 for Morphy at Knight odds, including games 'played before and after his visit to Europe', but this is hard to reconcile with the +17-9=3 result at Knight odds given by the Chess Monthly of Jan. 1858, the difference being only +1-1. |
