| Lawson and Sarah's Morphy website give the exact date of this offhand game that preceded the more formal match at Knight odds between Morphy and Thompson. Staunton, in the Illustrated London News of 20 Aug. 1859 gives +6-3=1 for the match, which other sources give as +5-3=1, but that score may include this offhand game that was played a few days before the formal match. The New York Saturday Press of 29 Oct. 1859, the New York Clipper of 12 Nov. 1859, and the New Orleans Sunday Delta of 13 Nov. 1859 give a result of +16-9=1 for Knight odds games between Morphy and Thompson, including three separate match results recorded here at +1-0=0, +5-3=1 and +10-6=0, respectively. |
