Lawson gives dates as 12-21 May 1859. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of 17 May 1859 describes one game played on the evening of the 16th. Frère, in an 1884 speech (quoted by Hillyer, p.167) gave +17-10=4 for Morphy at Knight odds, including games 'played before and after his visit to Europe', but this is hard to reconcile with the +17-9=3 result at Knight odds given by the Chess Monthly of Jan. 1858, the difference being only +1-1. Löwenthal in the Era of 19 June 1859 (p.5) says Morphy played 6 games with Perrin at Knight odds and 'lost but one'. This was corrected in the 26 June 1859 issue (p.14), where it says that Morphy won all but one, which was drawn, which is consistent with the result given in the Chess Monthly of June 1859 (p.200). |
