| Spinrad gives +5-3=1 from the New York Times of 18 June 1859. Löwenthal also gives it in the Era of 24 Jul. 1859 (p.5), as does the Chess Monthly of July 1859 (p.221) and the Sunday Times of 21 Aug. 1859 (supplement, p.3). Lawson and Sarah's Morphy website give the same result and exact start and end dates. Staunton, in the Illustrated London News of 20 Aug. 1859 gives +6-3=1, but this includes another game that was played before the formal match. The New York Saturday Press of 29 Oct. 1859, the New York Clipper of 12 Nov. 1859, and the New Orleans Sunday Delta of 13 Nov. 1859 give a result of +16-9=1 for Knight odds games between Morphy and Thompson, including three separate match results recorded here at +1-0=0, +5-3=1 and +10-6=0, respectively. |
