The result given in the 1 July 1880 issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle is: Roberts 7.5, Fisher 6, drawn 5, 'a short time ago'. Clearly something is not quite right. The report also says that Roberts won by the odd game, so it seems likely to have been +7-6=5. The Weekly Irish Times of 5 Jun. 1880 says +7-6 excluding draws. I will guess that the match finished in early June, but it could have been finished in May. Winter's Chess Notes page has games from a match between J.D. Roberts and 'H. Fisher', as does his book Kings, Commoners, and Knaves. This might be an error for B.W. Fisher, but it might also be a different player. |
