This is a soft result. We are only told that Lionel Kieseritzky generally won a majority from von Ungern-Sternberg, and I don't usually use such vague statements, but we have so few results from as early as this, that it seems worth using. The account by Guido Kieseritzky in the Schachzeitung does not give even rough dates, but he says that Baron Franz von Ungern-Sternberg came to Dorpat at the time that he and his brother Lionel were 'Tertianer' at the Gymnasium (grammar school). They both entered the grammer school in Dorpat in 1819, so I am guessing that they were 'Tertianer' about 1822, and that the games with von Ungern-Sternberg took place then. This is a very tentative reading of the account, and it could have been considerably later. I use 1.5-0.5 to represent a majority, without giving it too much weight. |
