| Zavatarelli cites a number of contemporary sources that constrain the match to the month of May 1859. Lawson gives the result 5-5 from the Chess Monthly of July 1859, ignoring the 4 draws. Löwenthal gives the result +5-5=4 in the Era of 5 Jun. 1859 (p.5). The Neue Berliner Schachzeitung of May 1869 (p.130) gives +8-5 for de Riviere, but this includes wins in 3 consultation games, so the implied result of solo games is +5-5. Also, Staunton gives one of the games in the Illustrated London News of 2 July 1859 (p.19) and another in the 23 June 1860 issue (p.614). |
