| This was a long protracted match, the final game of which was played in Feb. 1860. I have recorded that game separately here, because all the other games were played much earlier. According to the Sunday Times of 18 Sep. 1859, the score was then +6-4=10 for Campbell. The Era of 20 Nov. 1859 (p.5) gives a score of +6-4=11 at that point. According to the Illustrated London News of 18 Feb. 1860 (p.166), the final score was +7-4=10 for Campbell. The Westminster Papers of 2 Oct. 1876 (p.104) and the Toronto Globe of 6 Jan. 1877 have +7-5=14 for Campbell; Spinrad also gives +7-5=14 from the Tribune of 14 Jan. 1877 and 12-9 from the Oxford Encyclopaedia of Chess Games; A Century of British Chess (p.105) has +7-4=11; the Chess Player's Chronicle of Mar. 1860 has +7-4=11 for Campbell; the Era of 5 Feb. 1860 (p.14) has +7-4=11 for Campbell; Di Felice gives +3-3=1, but this must be based on an early report. The report in the Era of 6 Feb. 1859 (p.5) gives +3-2=1 for Campbell and the report of 6 Mar. 1859 (p.14) gives +3-3=2. According to the Chess Player's Chronicle of Dec. 1859, the match started in Dec. 1858, and Falkbeer in the Sunday Times of 19 Dec. 1858 (p.10) implies that it had started. The Era of 23 Jan. 1859 gives a score at that point of +2-2=1. |
