The Apr. 1864 issue of the Neue Berliner Schachzeitung (p.128) says that Hirschfeld never got a better ratio than 10:40 against Suhle and that in a formal match Suhle scored +7-0. This is clarified by Hirschfeld in the Nov. 1864 issue (p.343) where he says that early on his winning ratio was even lower, but he got better as he went along and in the end, taking all their games into account, the numerical result was probably close to 10:40. Since we have a match result of +7-0=2 (or 8-1) for Suhle, I subtract these, leaving a result of +32-9 for Suhle in their offhand games, and assume that they took place in Apr. 1860, like the formal match games. |
