Notes:
The result appears in a letter in the 18 Feb. 1838 issue of Bell's Life in London by Harry Wilson (using pseudonyms 'Veritas' and 'Un Vieux Moustache'). Confirmation that it was Harry Wilson can be found in the 11 Feb. 1838 column, in which the editor (George Walker) finishes his comments to 'Veritas' (who previously referred to himself as a 'Hampshire Bumpkin') with the phrase 'Vale Harry', the 25 Feb. 1838 issue, in which 'Un Vieux Moustache' is referred to as 'H.W.', and in the 4 Mar. 1838 issue, in which the response letter is signed 'H.W., alias Veritas, alias Bumpkin'. Finally, all correspondence from the player with all these pseudonyms comes from Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight, where Harry Wilson lived. No date is given for the match, but it follows a claim by Wilson that Mouret was not a Pawn and move above the top English players, Brand, Cochrane, Keen, and Mercier, in 1818. He also says that this match was played when Cochrane was 'in the very zenith of his play'. Cochrane was 20 in 1818, and left for India in 1824, so this gives a window of possibility. I will guess at 1820, in the middle of this range, but this may be in error by 2 or 3 years.
