Notes:
This is a soft result. Walker (editor of the chess column in Bell's Life in London) claims in the 11 Feb. 1838 issue that Wilson (a.k.a. Veritas), 'never could have made a stand at pawn and move against either of the following players, who all received those odds of poor Mouret --- viz. Brand, Cochrane, Keen, and Mercier.' In the 18 Feb. 1838 column, Wilson questions this claim, and gives as evidence his match result against Cochrane at pawn and move (+5-2 for Wilson), as well as reiterating the claim that he once beat Mouret at Pawn and Move odds. I have included those results, but Wilson may be highlighting his best results, and downplaying the rest, so I include here as a counterbalance a 1.5-1.5 result against each of Brand, Cochrane, Keen, and Mercier, in each case receiving Pawn and Move, which is suggestive of equality when receiving those odds. This is very uncertain, of course, but treads a middle line between Walker's claim that he was not even capable of managing those odds against those players, with his own claim that he was better than those odds. No date is given in this discussion, but Wilson mentions these results after his claim that in 1818 Mouret could not give Pawn and Move to Brand, Cochrane, Keen, and Mercier (those comparisons, by the way, are handled here by Mouret's results against these players while playing in the automaton). Cochrane went to India in 1924, so I put these soft comparisons between Wilson and each of Brand, Cochrane, Keen, and Mercier in 1921 as a midpoint, but also after the definite Cochrane-Wilson match result, which I put in 1920. Perhaps Cochrane's strength was still growing.
