| Elo gives a total for this and the 1860 match of 11-10 for Anderssen, but other sources give +5-5=1 for the 1860 match and +5-4 or +4-3=2 for the 1861 match, totalling, +10-9=1. Barcza gives the score of the second match as +4-3=1 for Anderssen. Giffen gives date as Aug. 1861; Feenstra Kuiper and Di Felice give dates as 23-30 July 1861; Pope gives dates as 23 July to 1 Aug. 1861 from the Field, the Dial and the Illustrated London News. Bell's Life in London (4 Aug. 1861, p.8) also says that the last game was played on Thursday, and the issue of 18 Aug. 1861 (p.1) gives the last game with the date 1 Aug. 1861. The result is given in the June 1861 issue of Shakhmatniy Listok, so perhaps that issue was published late? There it is stated that it began on 30 June and finished a week later, but perhaps there was some confusion, especially given the translation between Russian old-style dates and English dates. |
