| Feenstra Kuiper, Spinrad and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give date as 1863; Sunnucks, Golombek, Hooper and Whyld, Di Felice and Sarah's Chess Journal give 1862-1863; Giffen gives Dec. 1862 - Jan. 1863. The Era of 21 Dec. 1862 (p.5) announces the match. Harding quotes the Field of 20 Dec. 1862 saying it started 'last Monday', i.e. 15 Dec. 1863. The Illustrated London News gives the result after the first 3 games in the 27 Dec. 1862 issue and gives the final result (+7-1 for Steinitz, the 2 draws are not mentioned) in the 10 Jan. 1863 issue. The Era of 18 Jan. 1863 gives the same result. Harding quotes Wormald in the Sporting Gazette saying that the match ended 'on Monday night', 5 Jan. 1863, with the score +7-1=1 for Steinitz. Bell's Life in London of 1 Feb. 1863 gives +6-1 for Steinitz. The New York Clipper of 21 Feb. 1863 gives +7-1=1 for Steinitz. The Dundee Courier and Argus of 10 Jan. 1863 gives +7-1=3 for Steinitz. All other sources give +7-1=2. |
