| Feenstra Kuiper has +5-1=0 for Steinitz, as does Walker in Bell's Life in London (13 Sept. 1863, supp. p.1); Sergeant, Sunnucks, Di Felice, Spinrad, Giffen, La Grande Storia degli Scacchi and Sarah's Morphy website have +5-1=1. The Era gives a partial result of +1-0=1 for Steinitz in the 3 May 1863 issue. The Illustrated London News gives partial results +3-1=2 for Steinitz in the 16 May 1863 issue and +4-1 in the 27 June 1863 issue, and gives the terminating win by Steinitz in the 1 Aug. 1863 issue. La Nouvelle Régence (June 1863, p.185) has +5-1=2 for Steinitz, as does the Field of 27 Jun. 1863 (quoted by Harding). Harding gives an argument that the result might actually have been +5-1=3, but since there is insufficient evidence of the extra games, he settles tentatively with +5-1=1. Feenstra Kuiper, Sunnucks, Spinrad, Giffen, La Grande Storia degli Scacchi and Sarah's Morphy website have date as 1863; Di Felice has 1862-1863. Harding gives the exact start date and quotes the Field of 27 Jun. 1863, which says it finished 'a day or two ago'. |
