Notes: |
Sergeant gives the result as +5-0=2 for Steinitz; the Era of 10 Jan. 1864 (p.6) gives +7-0=1 for Steinitz; other sources give +7-0=2 for Steinitz. Harding considers all the evidence and concludes that the latter is correct. Feenstra Kuiper and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give date as 1864; Sunnucks and Di Felice give 1863-1864; Spinrad gives 1863. The result of +1-0=1 for Steinitz after the first two games is given in the Era of 27 Dec. 1863 (p.4), so I presume that it started in that month. |
