| Sunnucks gives date as 1870; Feenstra Kuiper, Golombek, and Hooper and Whyld give 1871; La Grande Storia degli Scacchi gives 1870-1871; Sergeant gives Dec. 1870 - mid-Jan. 1871; Di Felice gives 10 Dec. 1870 to 21 Jan. 1871, as does the Schachzeitung of Feb. 1871 (p.39). The Illustrated London News of 17 Dec. 1870 says the match began 'Monday last', so presumably 12 Dec. 1870 and the location is given as London. The Era of 25 Dec. 1870 (p.4) gives explicitly 'the 12th inst.' as the start date. The Westminster Papers of 1 Jan. 1871 (p.137) gives 10 Dec. 1870 as the start date. The final result (+3-2=4 for Rosenthal) is given in the 21 Jan. 1871 issue of the Illustrated London News and again in the 4 Feb. 1871 issue, and the end date is given in both places as 14 Jan. 1871. The Westminster Papers of 1 Feb. 1871 (p.156) has the same result but an end date of 16 Jan. 1871. |
