Notes: |
Most sources treat this as a formal match. However, there may be evidence that Anderssen did not consider it so. For instance, Walker, in Bell's Life in London (5 Aug. 1871, p.3) asserts that the match was played under conditions in which each player agreed to play a specified number of games with certain openings, Anderssen with the Evans attack four times, and Zukertort with the Vienna Gambit three times. This suggests that it was not considered a normal test of relative strength of the two players. |
