Hilbert, in his book on Shipley (p.401), says that Neill beat Ware with the score +15-1=2, but that score refers to the Boston Championship tournament of 1874. Reichhelm and the American Chess Magazine of Jul. 1899 give the score as 7-3 for Neill, the former saying it was for the championship of New England, and the latter saying the match was played in May 1874. The Spirit of the Times of 16 May 1874 gives a score of 7-1 for Neill, but the evidence of other sources weighs against this. |
