| Hooper and Whyld (1st edition) give date as 1875 on p.263, but 1872 on p.387, corrected to 1875 in the 2nd edition, p.459; Feenstra Kuiper, Golombek, Diggle (quoted at Chess Notes) and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give 1875; Di Felice gives 2 Nov. - 7 Dec. 1875; Harding gives start date 2 Nov. 1875. The Illustrated London News of 6 Nov. 1875 and the Field of 6 Nov. 1875 say it started 'Tuesday last' (2 Nov.), and the 11 Dec. 1875 issues of the same two publications say it concluded on Tuesday (7 Dec. 1875). The Huddersfield College Magazine of Jan. 1876 (p.86) gives the end date explicitly as 7 Dec. 1875. Harding gives an end date of 9 Dec. 1875. The official result was 5.5-3.5, because according to the rules the first 5 draws did not count, so +4-2=8 counted as +4-2=3. Here I use all games played for rating purposes. |
