Sergeant says that the match began on 27 June 1877, that Zukertort won two games and then broke off the match. However, reports in The Field (30 June 1877, 7 July 1877, 14 July 1877) make it clear that the two games were played on the 27th and 29th of June, 1877, with a score of +1-1. The 30 June 1877 issue of the Illustrated London News says the match, for the first to win 7, was to have started 'Wednesday last', which would be 27 June 1877. Di Felice gives the date as 1876 and score as +2-1 for Blackburne and no 1877 match. Harding makes it clear that there was no 1876 match, and that the result of the aborted 1877 match was +1-1, both in Eminent Victorian Chess Players and in his biography of Blackburne. |
