Spinrad indicates the discrepancy between the +2-1 result for von der Lasa given in a letter by von der Lasa, and +3-2=1 either for Buckle or for Lasa (for Buckle according to Sergeant) from games published in the Chess Player's Chronicle. Hilbert (p.85) says he could only find three games between them in the Chess Player's Chronicle. There is one game in the Sept. 1843 issue (pp.266-267), a win by von der Lasa. Three games appear in the Feb. 1846 issue (pp.53-56), with result +2-1 for Buckle, though von der Lasa wrote later that the last of these was actually played against Hanstein (see Hilbert, p.113). These three are said to have been played in the Summer of 1844, but this is probably an error for 1843, unless Buckle made a second trip, and it is also mentioned that von der Lasa won the majority. The win by von der Lasa here is the same game as reported in the Sept. 1843 issue but with a different ending. In any case, we want total scores here, not just random published games, so I have adopted the result reported by von der Lasa. |
