| The name Willi Weichert, or W. Weichert of Fürstenwalde (or sometimes of Ketschendorf) appears in primary sources often from the 1928 to 1940. In the 1942 Deutsche Schachzeitung (p.86), Paul Weichert is listed at a Brandenburg tournament, and information sent to me by Alan McGowan (from his corresponedent, Ulrich Tamm, and from a tournament book of Bad Saarow 1937 by Dale Brandreth, but perhaps originally Lachaga) say that it was Paul Weichert at Hastings 1932-1933 and at Bad Saarow 1937, though contemporary sources show W. Weichert at both (for example the British Chess Magazine of 1933 and Richter editing Schachwart 1933, p.17, have W. Weichert, and McGowan says he has found 'the Furstenwalder Weichert' mentioned in some newspapers as present at Bad Saarow 1937). One possibility is that Paul was another one of Willi Weichert's given names, and that after 1940 he decided to use 'Paul' instead of 'Willi' in chess events. Another is that there was a separate player named Paul Weichert, but then which events he played in is not clear. |
