Notes: |
Di Felice gives 'Mayer, Lajos' as the name of the player at Hamburg 1902 and Nuremberg 1906. Gaige (Chess Tournament Crosstables) gives just 'Mayer' for the first of these, but 'G. Mayer' for the second. Gaige also has 'G. Mayer' at Hamburg 1910, where Di Felice has 'Maier, Georg', but the two players of the latter name were too young for Hamburg 1910. There was also a Mayer at Munich 1900. The book Magyar Sakktörténet, Vol.3, makes it clear that the player at all of these events was György Mayer, of Hungary. Alan McGowan (personal communication) found a record of baptism of a Gyorgy Meyer in Hungary in 1861, but the identification seems uncertain, especially given the spelling of the surname. Magyar Sakktörténet, Vol.1 (p.170), however has a 'Mayer György' in Temesvár (TimiÛaura). |
