Notes: |
This is the 'Rev. H.A. Pickard' of Christ Church College, who played for the Oxford University team in 1882 (see Land and Water, 18 Feb. 1882). Sergeant, in A Century of British Chess (p.176) mentions 'Rev. C.H. Pickard, of Christ Church', and identifies him with a player referred to as 'Packard' in the Chess Player's Chronicle. To make things worse, the 1 Mar. 1884 issue of Land and Water (p.203) has 'Rev. A.A. Pickard' playing in Oxford. I will guess that this is the same person. Steve Mann (personal communication) identifies H.A. Pickard as Rev. Henry Adair Pickard, born 1832 or 1833. |
