Spektrowski, a correspondent of batgirl on her web page on Prince Galitzin, speculates that the Prince Galitzin who was involved in chess was Prince Sergey Grigorievich Golitsyn (1803-1868), and Zavatarelli has 'Prince Sergey Grigor'evich Golitsin' in his biography of Kolisch. However, Shakhmatniy Listok (Jul. 1863, p.220) has 'Sergey Vladimirovich Golitzin' (in Cyrillic), as the opponent of Petrov in a 2-game match. N. Grekov's web article has 'V.S. Golitsyn' (also in Cyrillic). It seems fairly certain that these refer to the same person, but perhaps Grekov got the initials reversed. Unless Shakhmatniy Listok got the second name wrong, this would seem not to be Prince Sergey Grigorievich Golitzin. The Schachzeitung of Oct. 1855 (p.320) has 'F.S. Galitzin' (the initial 'F' may stand for 'Fürsten' or Prince). There was also a Nikolay Nikolaevich Golitsin, who seems also to have been a Prince, born 1836, and mentioned in 1886. |
