Notes: |
The names 'A.B. Hopkins' and 'Bassett Hopkins' both appear as members of the City of London Club (for example in the Chess Player's Chronicle of 26 Nov. 1884, p.225, where both appear). Sometimes it is hyphenated as 'Bassett-Hopkins' (for example, in the British Chess Magazine of Jun. 1891, p.271). It seems likely that these are the same person, but, confusingly, the Deutsches Wohenschach of 5 July 1891 (p.227) has 'R.F. Basset-Hopkins'. However, this source has errors in the initials for several other British players, so the initials 'R.F.' seem to be in error. Albert Bassett Hopkins was a London barrister. A short biography is given on the London Wiki site. It gives date of birth as 'c1848'. |
