Notes: |
16-player knockout. Exact scores not given, just who beat who, but presumably single-game rounds with draws to be replayed, since Arnold-Posse in round 1 went +0-0=2 and then was decided by lot (Arnold winning). Arnold beat Neuhaus in round 2 by default and Schnitzler and Kohtz shared 1st and 2nd without playing a final, though Arnold and Asbeck played for 3rd and 4th. Di Felice has 'Asbeck, Stephan Arnold Emil' and 'Hipp, F.A.' here, but Renette and Zavatarelli and the Schachzeitung have Julius Asbeck and L. Hipp. The Neue Berliner Schachzeitung on the other hand has 'E. Asbeck' and 'C.F. Hipp'. Even if the Schachzeitung is correct, it is not completely clear whether it was Julius Asbeck jun. or J. Asbeck sen., but I am guessing it was the former, since the latter is identified by the Schachzeitung with 'sen.' as a participant in a blindfold simultaneous exhibition against Paulsen, but the player in the tournament is just 'Asbeck' and the member of the Congress committee is just 'J. Asbeck'. |
