Place: Aachen
Start date: 2 Aug. 1868
End date: 4 Aug. 1868

Notes:
Single-round all-play-all but draws did not count and had to be replayed. Schallopp only played two games (losses to Anderssen and Zukertort) according to Gaige and Di Felice, but La Grande Storia degli Scacchi indicates that he played and lost all 4 games. Di Felice gives a play-off win by Lange against Anderssen, which Gaige omits. Feenstra Kuiper gives only totals but they are consistent with the play-off, with the Anderssen-Zukertort draw not being counted and with wins over Schallopp not being counted. La Grande Storia degli Scacchi also omits the uncounted draw. The account in the Illustrated London News is consistent with Di Felice's, except in not mentioning Anderssen's win over Schallopp and not being clear about who drew a game with Anderssen. Sissa of Sep. 1868 (p.280) also omits an Anderssen win over Schallopp, and is unclear about who drew with Anderssen (possibly Lange, possibly Paulsen, but no indication that it was Zukertort). Di Felice gives dates Aug. 1-6; Staunton in the Illustrated London News and the Chess World gives dates Aug. 1-4, as does Sissa. The Era of 5 Jul. 1868 (p.6) says it was to be played Aug. 2-4. The Illustrierte Zeitung of 15 Aug. 1868 9p.122) says it ended on 7 Aug. 1868. The Era of 16 Aug. 1868 (p.6) lists only the prize winners as Lange first, Zukertort second and W. Paulsen third (but what about Anderssen?). The Era of 23 Aug. 1868 (p.7) gives a full account of scores, including Lange's win over Anderssen (no mention of it as a play-off game), and Zukertort's win over Schallopp, but does not mention a win by Anderssen over Schallopp, or the draw between Anderssen and Zukertort (despite the presence of an empty 'Drawn' column). Note that wins by Andersson over Schallopp and Zukertort over Schallopp are given in the Neue Berliner Schachzeitung of Sep. 1868 (pp.267-270).
