| This was a 6-player, single-round all-play-all, with draws not counting and replayed. Di Felice indicates a replayed draw between Anderssen and Zukertort, which is not indicated by Gaige or La Grande Storia degli Scacchi. Staunton in the Illustrated London News does not have the Anderssen-Zukertort draw but does indicate that a draw occurred between Paulsen and Schallopp. In the detailed report in the Schachzeitung of Sep. 1869 (pp.259-262) the only draw mentioned in the main tournament is one between Paulsen and Zukertort. This draw is given on pp.177-278. I will take the Schachzeitung as definitive. Gaige also omits the play-off. Di Felice gives starting date as 24 July; La Grande Storia degli Scacchi gives starting date as 25 July. The Neue Berliner Schachzeitung of Jun. 1869 (p.161) gives projected dates of 24-27 Jul. 1869. The Neue Berliner Schachzeitung of Jul.-Aug. 1869 (p.233) explains that although the main tournament was intended to finish on 27 Jul., the play-off match between Anderssen and Paulsen lasted until 2 Aug. 1869. Also, the win by Paulsen over Zukertort is given on pp.253-254 of the Jul.-Aug. Neue Berliner Schachzeitung, as well as pp.280-282 of the Schachzeitung, and dated 31 Jul. 1869. |
